What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a nonsurgical med spa procedure that uses light beams to remove the outermost layer of damaged skin. As old cells are removed, healthy tissue is revealed, and the skin appears firmer, smoother, and rejuvenated. When used on the face, laser skin resurfacing can treat issues such as wrinkles, scars, and acne marks. Other skin issues laser skin resurfacing can treat include:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Enlarged pores

Because these lasers are extremely precise, they work well for treating delicate areas such as the eyes and mouth.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Because laser treatments are so versatile, they are safe for a wide range of skin types and colors. If you struggle with uneven skin tone, discoloration, or stubborn fine lines, laser skin resurfacing can help.

Laser skin resurfacing is not ideal for men and women who suffer from chronic cold sores or fever blisters. Discuss any preexisting medical issues with your doctor prior to scheduling treatment.

What Is the Best Laser for Skin Resurfacing?

We use a variety of devices to perform laser skin resurfacing, and each one is ideal for a unique set of concerns. Your provider will recommend the best device for your specific skin type and goals, which may include:

  • HALO: This hybrid fractional laser combines ablative and non-ablative wavelengths to maximize results while minimizing downtime.
  • MOXI: This mild laser skin treatment helps address early signs of sun damage and aging to prevent wrinkles from forming.
  • Morpheus8: This combination of microneedling and radiofrequency energy delivers resurfacing and dermal remodeling for the face and body.
  • Contour TRL: Ideal for more advanced signs of aging, this tunable laser removed layers of aged or damaged skin.
  • MicroLaserPeel: Treat sun damage and texture concerns with this popular resurfacing option.
  • NanoLaserPeel: Opt for a gentler alternative to the MicroLaserPeel with this more superficial approach.

PREPPING FOR LASER RESURFACING

To prepare for your laser resurfacing appointment you will be provided with certain instructions that should be followed for a certain amount of time leading up to your procedure. Some things you will be asked to avoid include tanning beds, sun exposure, and medication that causes photosensitivity. You will also be asked to include a sun protection factor to your skincare routine, as this treatment can be dangerous if used on newly sun damaged skin. If you have a history of herpes, you will be given an antiviral medication to start taking two days prior to your treatment and continue to take for three days after while your skin heals.

What Happens During a Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment Session?

The treatment experience varies depending on the device, but most procedures begin with an application of a topical numbing cream to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment. Some lasers penetrate beneath the skin to stimulate new collagen growth, others remove the damaged superficial skin layer to reveal new skin, and some combine both approaches. Most procedures last 1 to 2 hours including numbing time, depending on the number of treatment areas.

Is Laser Skin Resurfacing Painful?

We are careful to make sure you are comfortable during your laser skin resurfacing treatment. We have several options for anesthesia, including topical and local. It is normal to still feel some warmth, tingling, or the sensation of a rubber band snapping against the skin.

Is Recovery Time Required After Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser skin resurfacing is a nonsurgical procedure, so you can return home immediately after. However, because your skin may be red and tender, many patients take a few days off from work to rest, relax, and heal. Avoid sun exposure, exercise, and swimming until your skin has completely healed. You will be given a complete list of post-treatment care instructions at your appointment.

RESULTS OF LASER SKIN RESURFACING WORK

  • Sagging skin
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Enlarged oil glands
  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Stretch marks

How Long Do Laser Skin Resurfacing Results Last?

After treatment, your skin texture will continue to improve over the next several weeks. Results typically last for up to 1 year, and follow-up treatments can be scheduled as needed.

Laser Skin Resurfacing FAQs

At what age should you start laser skin resurfacing?

While there isn't a specific age requirement, many individuals consider laser resurfacing in their late 30s or early 40s when signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage, start to become more noticeable. However, younger individuals with specific skin issues like acne scars or uneven skin texture may also benefit from laser resurfacing.

When should I avoid laser skin resurfacing?

Individuals with active infections and skin conditions, such as cold sores, eczema, or acne flare-ups, should postpone treatment until the infection has resolved to reduce the risk of complications. Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women are typically advised to avoid laser treatments due to potential risks to the fetus or infant.

How strong are the age-reversing effects of laser skin resurfacing?

The extent of the rejuvenating effects varies depending on factors such as the type of laser used, treatment intensity, and individual skin response, but laser skin resurfacing can have significant age-reversing effects, particularly for concerns like wrinkles, fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone and texture.

What will I look like immediately after laser skin resurfacing?

You can expect some degree of redness, swelling, and sensitivity in the treated area-- your skin may also feel warm or tight, similar to a mild sunburn. It's essential to follow post-treatment care instructions diligently to ensure optimal results and reduce the risk of complications.

Will laser treatments hurt?

Laser treatments are generally well-tolerated, but discomfort levels can vary depending on the individual's pain tolerance and the specific type of laser used. Crantford Costa Plastic Surgery will take steps to ensure your comfort throughout the treatment process.

How do I know if I need microneedling or laser skin resurfacing?

Both of these treatment options can create outstanding results in the right patients. In order to understand which treatment will work best for you, your skin type, and your goals, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our experienced skincare professionals.

What is the difference between BBL and MOXI?

BBL stands for broadband light, and unlike a laser, it treats the skin using short pulses of light energy of varying wavelengths. It targets visible signs of aging anywhere on the body.rnrnMOXI is a fractionated laser that is an excellent choice for long-term maintenance and improving the overall health and appearance of your skin.

Is HALO the best laser treatment?

HALO is an excellent treatment that creates significant results with reduced downtime. However, the best laser treatment for you will depend on your circumstances, skin concerns, and other factors. We offer several of the best laser treatment options available.

Are laser treatments safe?

All the laser treatments we offer at our skin clinic have a proven track record of safety. We can adjust settings such as the depth of penetration, temperature, and pulse duration, for optimal safety and customized results.

Are lasers good for your skin?

Yes, laser treatments are good for your skin. They not only help renew the surface of the skin, but by heating the deeper layers, they can prompt collagen remodeling for improved tone and resilience

Is laser skin resurfacing okay for darker skin tones?

Some more aggressive laser treatments carry a risk of post-treatment hyperpigmentation (excess pigment) or hypopigmentation (loss of pigmentation) in individuals with very dark skin. At CC Skin Clinic, all of our laser skin resurfacing treatments are safe for darker skin tones.
