Our chins and jawlines frame our faces, creating definition between the face and neck and balancing our facial features. When we have naturally insufficient bone structure or lose volume over time, our chins can appear weakened and alter our facial harmony overall. Chin augmentation or chin implant surgery helps our Charleston, SC patients equalize their facial proportions, address a weak chin, and strengthen their jawlines for a more harmonious overall appearance.
On this page, you’ll find answers to your questions about chin augmentation, from how it is performed to how much it costs and more.
Chin augmentation, also known as chin surgery or mentoplasty, is a facial plastic surgery procedure that reshapes the chin, usually by enhancement with an implant. Many times, our surgeons recommend chin surgery to rhinoplasty patients to achieve facial balance, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose. Chin surgery helps provide a harmonious appearance, especially to the profile. In doing so, it enhances jawline definition and chin-neck angulation.

During chin augmentation surgery, your plastic surgeon places a U-shaped silicone implant near your chin bone. This is done through a small incision hidden just under your chin, which leaves behind minimal visible scarring.
These implants come in many shapes to achieve a wide variety of cosmetic goals. Some are wider and extend farther around the jawline, whereas others concentrate volume in the front to boost projection at the point of the chin. During your consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss your goals in-depth to determine the best implant size and shape for you.
Because we want to create your ideal surgical results, the consultation is a critical part of the process. Your surgeon will walk you through your options and help you make choices that align with your anatomy and goals. This time will also be used to conduct a thorough medical history and address all your concerns and questions.
You will have another preoperative appointment closer to the date of your surgery. At this time, you will sign the consent forms, have photos and measurements taken, and receive detailed instructions for before and after surgery. Please adhere to these instructions closely as they are instrumental in ensuring your safety and comfort.
In addition to rhinoplasty, chin augmentation is often combined with dermal fillers to the chin, jawline, cheeks, and other areas to further define your features and balance their proportions. These minimally invasive injections provide temporary results that last for a year or so.
Some people choose to enhance their results with liposuction of the neck and jawline. This further corrects a “double chin” by reducing submental fullness and enhancing the natural definition of the jawline.
Initial chin augmentation recovery takes about a week, though swelling may last an additional few weeks. Most people only need a few days away from work to recuperate. It’s normal to experience some soreness and tightness in the chin for the first week or so.
Chin implants are solid and cannot rupture, so they last longer than other cosmetic implants. Many people find their chin implants last a lifetime. In most cases, people only need a single chin augmentation procedure to enjoy results indefinitely.
